MOISSANITE –  MEET MAHMUTLAR

Is a Moissanite Diamond a Real Diamond?

Although a centre stone is typically a diamond, there are other options that can make an special ring more affordable and just as beautiful.

One of these options is moissanite.

Moissanite, is a naturally occurring mineral found in limited quantities in the earth. Originally discovered in 1893 in a meteor crater, by nobel peace price winner Dr. Henri Moissan, the jewel was later named in his honour.

The natural quantities of moissanite are too small to create jewellery. It is a very rare and scarce mineral.

Created moissanite is silicon carbide formed as a single crystal.

And

It is unlike any other jewel ever seen!

Dr. Henri Moissan discovered minute quantities of a new mineral in an ancient meteorite in Arizona. At its essence was the potential for an absolutely shimmering brilliance, fire, lustre, and incredible hardness.

Unfortunately, the supply of natural moissanite wasn’t large enough even to create a pair of earrings. It was only after years of research that a breakthrough discovery enabled the limited production & distribution of moissanite with crystals large enough to act as diamond substitutes. It’s production was an uncommon combination of science and art.

Properly cut by master cutters the comparison to fine diamond is unavoidable.

Moissanite has measurably more fire, brilliance and luster at a fraction of the cost of diamond.

These faceted jewels now offer you a variety of choices as they are available near colourless to very slightly tinted are available in round, oval, marquise, pear shape, radiant cut octagon, heart shape, triangle, trillion, princess cut squares, and antique squares.

The optical properties provide diamond with it’s brilliance, lustre and fire. Moissanite out performs diamond on all counts.”

But is a Moissanite really as good as a Diamond?

The truth is there is a very little to set the two apart and most diamond testers cannot detect whether a gemstone is a real diamond or moissanite gemstone.

HARDNESS -DIAMOND V MOISSANITE

The traditional test for a valuable gemstone is hardness. The harder a material, the more difficult it is to scratch.

On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, moissanite is rated as a 9.25, which is a great score that is higher than any gemstone used in jewellery besides diamonds.

Diamonds, which are the hardest known mineral, score a 10.

BRILLIANCE Diamonds v Moissanite

Brilliance, which refers to the ability to reflect white light, is a good measure for how much a diamond will ‘sparkle’.

Moissanite disperses light very well and is actually more brilliant than a diamond.

Additionally, moissanite is less likely to attract grease or dirt than a diamond and should keep the ‘sparkle’ longer in between cleanings.

COLOUR – Diamonds v Moissanite

Certified diamonds are graded on colour and can be compared with one another

Moissanite gemstones are not graded on color.

Classic moissanite is not colourless and many feel that its colour is similar to a GIA-certified K-color diamond.

As with diamonds, the smaller the moissanite, the more colourless it will look.

Additionally, under certain lighting, moissanite may project a yellow or green hue. Although recent improved production techniques have eliminated unwanted discolouration making it even more beautiful,

PRICE – Diamond v Moissanite

Overall, moissanite is a fraction of the cost of a diamond.

With moissanite you normally pay more for size rather than cut.

How to tell the difference between a diamond and a moissanite gemstone

The truth is that the latest handcrafted moissanite can fool even the most sophisticated diamond testers and it is becoming more and more difficult to be sure whether a diamond is a real diamond or actually a manufactured  moissanite.

Whether you choose diamonds or the cheaper moissanite you should ensure that you are buying what you are paying for and check certificates and authenticity as a simple diamond tester is no longer sufficient to prove the worth of the gemstone.

On the other hand, the mineral source for MOISSANITE is far more rare than diamonds so if you invest in the cheaper option today you may well find you have a very valuable investment for the future.
